If I look at the HTML5 validation, it says "Document uses the Unicode Private Use Area(s), which should not be used in publicly exchanged documents."

This was a deliberate choice we made when implementing font-icons into some templates.  We chose to use the Private Use Area (PUA) specifically so that visitors to your site that depend on assistive devices, like screen readers, would not have issues.  The use of (PUA) for the font-icons ensures that screen readers will not try to read these as characters on the page. Accessibility for your visitors was worth a validation warning to us. This warning does not invalidate the markup in any way.
